2. Buying Zone Of The Enders For The Metal Gear Solid 2 Demo

In the early 2000s, if you’d told me you’d just spent a brief-but-satisfying, action-packed evening with Zoe, I’d pat you on the back and congratulate you on finding the red light district.

But ZOE - or, “Zone of the Enders” - is nothing to do with where your mum hangs about on a Friday night, but rather a fast-paced anime game featuring mech pilots and a whole bunch of screaming.

But folks who couldn’t tell their Gundam from their Evangelion were quick to pick up the title for a different reason altogether - the game came with a demo of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of The Patriots, the hotly-anticipated blockbuster follow-up to... ah, I dunno, some game.

This is pretty notable to me, as I even remember gaming magazines doing double-page spreads on the content of the Metal Gear Solid 2 demo - first-person aiming, new ways to hide, and so on - but only including a tiny quarter-page footnote about ZOE, the actual, full game it came with.

But, snark aside - Zone of the Enders was a pretty repetitive (and brief) experience, so I’m not surprised some gamers squeezed extra time out of that included demo.
