10 Times You Were An Utter Dick To NPCs
9. Freeze-Dried Doorman - Tomb Raider II
In Tomb Raider II, Lara faces down the likes of dinosaurs, giant spiders and lumbering men made of stone. But perhaps her most renowned foe is Winston Smith... or, at least, that would be the case if these things were measured by which character in the game players were the cruellest to.
The inclusion of Croft Manor in the PlayStation 1 run of Tomb Raider games was a stroke of genius as it not only demonstrated Lara's affluence but also gave players a safe area to practice her variety of tank-controlled moves. In Tomb Raider II, she's joined by the Croft family butler Winston, who follows her around the map, rattling a tea tray with his arthritis-suffering wrists.
Inside the home, is a big walk-in freezer and, yes, Winston will even trail Lara in here in case she gets a bit thirsty. Naturally, of course, the first time any player realises they can get out and shut the door on poor Winston... they do.
In defence of us players who did this, 2015's Rise of the Tomb Raider makes reference to it in a letter written by Winston recounting the story of a young Lara doing the very same. So perhaps we were all partaking in some cosmic video game destiny, canonically speaking. (Or, more simply, we were trapping an old man in a freezer and laughing.)
