10 Tired Video Game Plots Everyone Is Sick Of Seeing

9. Disgraced Cops On The Run

Not since LA Noire introduced everyone to Cole Phelps, a rookie detective lumbered with traffic investigation, have you seen a video game cop go through anything that might be considered a normal day? If you€™re a police detective in a video game, the odds are good that you€™ll solve three murders before you€™ve even tucked into your first doughnut. That€™s okay though, because you€™re also incredibly experienced €“ you€™re an amazing driver, expert marksman and have proven your unparalleled combat skills during years of loyal service. Then one day, someone will decide to frame you as part of their evil master plan, and your life will become a living hell in about ten minutes. Some sort of crime €“ it€™s normally murder and the victim€™s often someone you care about €“ will be pinned on you and, despite all the justice you€™ve meted out in your career, everyone will immediately assume you€™re guilty as sin and clap you in irons. After you escape €“ and you will, because everyone else you work with is apparently incompetent €“ you€™ll find yourself on the wrong end of a manhunt as you struggle to clear your name and avenge your wife, neighbour, window cleaner or whoever it was you€™re meant to have bumped off. It may be a convenient way to explain your protagonist€™s talents and motivations, but it€™s also a storyline that€™s criminally overused, and not just in games. Whether it€™s Brazil, Hong Kong or even fantasy settings like Dishonored, we€™ve all spent far too long playing video games that think they€™re The Fugitive. It€™s time to surprise us €“ give us competent police, characters who are actually guilty, or even multiple protagonists€ anything other than a plot first dreamt up for a TV serial over half a century ago.
