8. Chapter 13: Redemption - Final Fantasy XV

Final Fantasy is of course a card-carrying RPG franchise centered around exploring lush, vast worlds and battling awesome enemies, but one thing it certainly isn't is survival horror, right?

Well, Final Fantasy XV made the bold, highly divisive decision to offer up its own riff on Resident Evil in the game's thirteenth chapter, "Redemption," where protagonist Noctis is stripped of his weapons and powers.

For between two and three hours, players are forced to slog their way through a repetitive, nightmarish industrial labyrinth, leveling up key cards in order to progress while avoiding the creepy-as-hell stalker-type enemies wandering the halls.

With only the Ring of the Lucii to help you escape slippery situations, stealth and hiding are mostly necessary, which couldn't be further from what most people play Final Fantasy games for.

The fan outcry was choral enough that Square Enix ended up patching the infamous level to make it effectively trivial. But if you played it on launch, you'll likely remember how absolutely agonising this truly was.
