The Last of Us is one of the most finely-paced games of all time, adeptly combining cinematic action set-pieces, stealth sequences, and plenty of quieter moments in which you can soak in the sombre atmosphere and uncover fascinating - though usually grim - stories about the world. One of the best examples of this happens in Chapter 10, when Joel and Ellie are walking along a highway crammed with defunct vehicles. As you're walking, you see one of those classic American camper vans with a body hanging out of the door - a relatively common sight that you'll probably have become accustomed to at this point. But head into the van, and you discover a family photo with four people in it, and the words 'Forgive Us' written on the back. Exploring the van further, you find three bodies - one belonging to an adult, the other two to children. The fourth body, in the doorway, is presumably the father. It's up to you to guess what caused this family to meet their grisly end, but the note and fact that the bodies were covered up suggests that they were murdered by a desperate group of survivors, who then felt so guilty about what they did that they felt compelled to beg for the dead family's forgiveness. A powerful moment that's easy to miss, and which captures the savagery - yet also humanity - in the Last of Us' world.
