1. Whitney - Pokémon Gold & Silver

As a player who'd already mastered a Pokémon game by rising to the rank of Champion in Red & Blue, I thought I was pretty much unstoppable when the second generation rolled around. Then, after the first two gyms offered no real challenge and I strolled into Goldenrod City, it seemed like that position was easily cemented.

However, I suddenly found that maybe things weren't going to be so easy after all. My Champion's mindset was about to come crashing down around me, all thanks to an incessantly rolling cow. Normal Type Leader Whitney and her Miltank caused me - and many a player - no end of frustration as the thing just seem to get stronger and stronger as each battle wore on. Just how could it be stopped?

With her Clefairy doing its best to waste some of your time early on, the battle only really gets started when Miltank arrives. But from that point on all hell breaks loose. Attract can render your team almost entirely useless and Milk Drink can restore its HP regularly to keep the battle dragging on and on. But it's Rollout that really does the damage. Doubling in power with each successive hit, this move can decimate a fledgling team in a matter of turns.

Unassuming though they may be, Whitney and Miltank appear at a point in the game where it's just so difficult to easily overcome this powerhouse strategy. Overcoming this obstacle was a gaming moment I will not forget...
