10 Trailers That Completely Misrepresented Their Video Games
8. The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum
As a lover of Daedalic Entertainment’s Deponia series I’m a bit of an apologist for the studio but there’s no denying that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was, well, a bit of a f*** up.
Though initially an intriguing concept with a curious and unexplored perspective into the monolith that is The Lord of the Rings lore, Gollum did not deliver on the promises of its trailer in the slightest. The cinematic announcement trailer promised a colourful and expansive world to explore, compelling stealth, and a suite of fan favourite characters. What we got was not so great. A huge graphical downgrade, a tonne of bugs and glitches, some of which actually broke the game, a dull world to explore, a series of uninteresting objectives, and a world that wasn’t nearly as detailed as what we’d been promised. Loads of interesting ideas but no ability to execute on them really sunk this one.
To Daedelic’s credit their initial story trailer does come with the caveat text “Game in development. Does not represent final quality.” We just didn’t know how accurately foreshadowing that statement would be.
