10 Trends That Are Killing Video Games

1. Annualised Franchises

Granted, Call of Duty is the big series that everyone's frowning upon right now for their annual releases of their products, and given that the EA Sports titles are perhaps just too easy a target, they're probably the best example of a top-tier franchise that has completely saturated itself (though going by sales, not quite over-saturated itself yet). This notion that developers must release a game every year or lose out on money only promotes the creative stagnation that has pretty much slammed the nails in the coffin of franchises like Medal of Honour and The Sims (we're seeing a pattern with EA here), and it's probably just a matter of time for Call of Duty, too. The point is that this sort of mentality bleeds through to other series, too; take the likes of Mario and Sonic, which seem to have a new iteration of some kind released every year or so, such that it devalues the brand and makes each subsequent entry seem even less memorable than the one before. How about taking your time creating a product that actually bring something new to the table? And to their credit, this year, at least Treyarch sort of did that with Black Ops 2...
