7. Killing The Boss In Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Resident Evil 7
Konami

The emotional core of MGS3 is the Boss, a charismatic female soldier and the 'Mother of Special Forces' who trained protagonist, Naked Snake, being pushed hard as a parental figure for him and the player in tow. After establishing this badass yet sympathetic character, the climax of the game's action sees Snake face Boss in the field.

The Boss, cutting through the Gordian knot of the game's convoluted Cold War plotline, says that his mission is to kill her and that as a soldier, he has to do it.

The fight that ensues, set in a field of falling white blossoms, is the most emotional scene in the Metal Gear series. The Boss is just so damn cool, so principled and dedicated in spite of how she is manipulated and betrayed by everyone, that we really don't want to kill her.

She's the most likeable character in the game, and yet MGS3 makes us engage her in a duel to the death. Damn it, Kojima.
