In case you missed it, last year Activision Blizzard held its annual Blizzcon event and promised an announcement relating to the Diablo franchise. Naturally this got the hardcore fans frothing at their demon mouths for a potential fourth instalment. So, they converged on the Anaheim Convention Centre in LA for the big reveal... only to be shown a new mobile game. Suffice to say, they weren't happy.

Fans wondered why they didn't get an announcement for Diablo IV, seeing as the third game came out six years prior. Well, unbeknownst to them, the franchise had suffered several turbulent years of management changes, radical design changes, and a cancellation.

During the mass controversy surrounding Blizzcon 2018, Kotaku's Jason Schreier reported that Diablo IV had been in development since 2014 and was to be a big departure. The director of the beloved Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo III was heading-up the new game, which he envisioned as a third-person, over-the-shoulder dungeon crawler inspired by Dark Souls. After two years however, that game was cancelled and it was back to the drawing board.

So Diablo IV, as it is now, has been in development since 2016. That means it's likely to be a 2020 release at the earliest. Activision is currently enduring some terrible PR for mass layoffs, despite reporting record business numbers. They could use a win, and it has even admitted that its 2019 slate is weak, so an official announcement at Blizzcon 2019 is as surefire as a Call of Duty announcement.
