The Non-Hype

Much like Arkham Asylum, GoldenEye 007 had the stink of a licensed video game lingering around it, given how terrible the overwhelming majority of video games based on movies were - and basically continue to be.

And that's without even considering the generally low standard of console FPS games at the time.

As a result, GoldenEye released to minimal hype, exacerbated by general skepticism from the games media, who typically gave it unremarkable preview coverage and expressed concern about the project's numerous delays.

A poor showing at E3 1997, just two months before the game hit shelves, didn't help at all.

The Big Reaction

Despite expectations that Star Fox 64 would be the N64's big summer release in 1997, GoldenEye went on to receive near-universal critical acclaim for its uncommonly reverent campaign and especially its ludicrously deep multiplayer suite.

GoldenEye quickly became a system seller and went on to shift 8 million units, making it the third best-selling N64 game of all time, in large part due to the absurd appeal of its four-player split-screen multiplayer.

Better still, it was festooned with countless Game of the Year awards and, despite how dated it is today, continues to be regarded as one of the greatest and most influential games of all time.

Without it, the console FPS never would've flourished in the way that it did.
