5. Driver 2 Beat GTA III To The On-Foot Open-World Crime Game Idea

While Grand Theft Auto was still a rudimentary top-down shooter, Driver was pioneering open world gameplay on the original Playstation. With the first game allowing players to drive around fully explorable mini open worlds in the shape of iconic American cities, the developers opted to push this vision one step further with the sequel.

Instead of only being able to drive around the city, in Driver 2 players were given the ability to get out of their vehicle and explore certain sections of the world on foot. Sure, it was a bit rudimentary looking back, but there was nothing else quite as advanced as this on PS1.

Of course, GTA III took this same concept and ran with it on the Playstation 2, but the second instalment in the Driver series should still be commended for showing what 3D rendering was capable of creating even on hardware as limited as Sony's first console.
