10 Unique Horror Video Games You Need To Play
9. Outlast
Within this list you might see some games with room for argument about their specific uniqueness. Outlast could absolutely be one of them, as many would argue it copies a whole lot from another game in this list that came out years before.
You have to think about more than simply copying, though, particularly when you think of something like Half-Life and how every modern shooter has built off its foundation.
In the same vein, that’s exactly what Outlast (and many others) took from Amnesia and added onto it.
What did Outlast add onto the formula? Well, some very interesting characters, a more coherent, if not simpler story, a modern-day setting that was easier to get into, and extra mechanics such as batteries, the camera and traversal.
The game follows a reporter sneaking into a mental facility to uncover a spooky mystery, and from there you’ll run into all sorts, from a hulking brute looking to break you in half, two completely naked, knife-wielding weirdos, a creepy doctor who cuts off your fingers and a literal ghost that haunts the facility.
Among criticism, one thing Outlast gets right is a unique and memorable character set.
