10 Unmissable Single Player Gaming Experiences
9. Metroid Prime (2002)
The long running Metroid series had been highly regarded amongst gamers for nearly two decades prior to the release of Prime, and much like Nintendo themselves managed when creating Ocarina of Time just a few years earlier, Retro Studios did an incredible job of translating the gameplay of this long running franchise into 3D for the first time.
As with the 2D adventures the focus here is on exploration, and from the icy plains of the Phendrana drifts to the lava lake of the Magmoor Caverns, Talon IV is simply one of the most immersive game worlds ever created. The classic ‘Metroidvania’ structure actively encourages players to explore, rewarding progress with an ever increasing array of skills and abilities, and every one of them is implemented flawlessly into the excellent first person control scheme. Many of these new abilities will give you access to areas that were previously just out of reach, but all of them ensure that Prime continuously offers the player something new to experiment with from start to finish.
Add to this a truly haunting original score, and you have one of the best games ever seen on a Nintendo console.
