10 Unmissable Single Player Gaming Experiences

7. Deus Ex (2000)

GAMING SINGLE PLAYER
Eidos

Set in the near future, in which a deadly disease has ravaged the population and only the most privileged have access to the vaccine, riots and terrorism have sent society spiralling into chaos. In order to fight this disorder the United Nations have formed anti-terrorist group UNATCO, one of whose agents is the physically augmented player character JC Denton.

At first glance Deus Ex may look like a first person shooter from the early 2000s, but it soon reveals itself to be so much more than that. Built around the augmentation system, players are given the freedom to improve and customise the skills and abilities of JC as they progress, and the way which you choose to upgrade your character has a huge impact on every aspect of the game. At a time when most games remained linear experiences, the branching storylines, many of which were completely optional, and the freedom to tackle situations in a variety of ways was a truly revolutionary.

It speaks volumes as to the quality of this title that almost twenty years and three sequels later, no game has been able to improve on the formula laid down by the original Deus Ex.
