10 Unmissable Single Player Gaming Experiences
6. Mass Effect 2 (2012)
Having defeated the invading Reapers, Commander Shepard learns that entire colonies have started to go missing in the far reaches of space. Desperate for allies and resources to help fight this unknown threat, Shepard has little choice but to work with the questionable Cerberus organisation.
The entire Mass Effect trilogy was a great success for Bioware, but the second game in the series remains the pinnacle. In order to succeed in their mission, Shepard must convince the best from around the galaxy to join their cause, and it is the stories of these characters that are the driving force behind the majority of the game. Digging deeper into the personalities of even seemingly minor characters truly makes them feel like real people in a way few other games have ever managed. This is not just window dressing however, as your relationship with each of the characters has a real impact on the fantastic final act: be prepared to make some incredibly tough choices!
Importantly, the third person combat which can constitute a fairly large portion of the game depending on your conversation choices, is also every bit as good as many first person shooters of the time. Combining a ‘Gears of War’ style cover system, with a host of unlockable abilities and powers, it surpasses all other efforts in the genre and ensures that everything always moves along at a good pace makes.
No other RPG has ever combined story-telling and action as successfully as Mass Effect 2.
