Cubchoo isn’t viable in battle at all, and even when evolved into Beartic it will be beneath the likes of Glaceon and Mamoswine for Ice types. If you’re only interested in battle meta, Cubchoo and Beartic’s involvement in Pokémon Go won’t interest you.

If you’re only playing for the battle meta though, you’re missing a large part of what makes the game so special.

Cubchoo is... we’ll just look at it! It’s a polar bear with a runny nose that’s turned into an icicle. Nobody should need to explain why that’s such an amazing design choice. Yes, like Teddiursa before it and Pancham still to come, the little bear cub loses its aesthetic appeal very quickly once it evolves. For now though, we can look forward to catching Cubchoo, even if we’ll eventually have to evolve at least one as a Dex filler.

It faces a lot of competition, not least from the five Kanto starters, but Cubchoo might just be the cutest ‘mon around too. With PoGo appealing more to casual players than base games tend to, Cubchoo’s appeal could see it become a definitive Pokémon of the Unova region.
