5. Still Wakes The Deep
Set for release on 18th June 2024, Still Wakes The Deep is the highly anticipated next game from The Chinese Room, the development team behind Dear Esther, Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture, and Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs.
Taking place within a claustrophobic oil rig off the coast of Scotland in the 1970s, this eerie title sees players take control of Caz McLearly, an ex-boxer from Glasgow who takes a job at the rig to escape his familial problems. Disaster strikes when a ferocious storm hits, but drowning in the freezing waters of the North Sea is the least of their worries as there’s something far more sinister lurking in the shadows.
Described by the developers as combining the naturalism of the films of Ken Loach with the more experimental feel of Kubrick and Argento, atmosphere is set to play a large part of this first-person narrative horror. With all communications cut off and the exits mysteriously gone, players will feel utterly isolated within the confines of the slowly sinking oil rig.
There's more to this game than pure horror. Wrapped within the unrelenting terror is a profoundly human story that unravels as players get to know the characters, making for a game that's as enthralling as it is gripping.
