Announced in 2021, Black Myth: Wukong is the first major title from Chinese studio Game Science (whose previous work was in mobile games) which places the Souls-like formula within Chinese folklore.

Unlike Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, another Souls-like set within Chinese history, Wukong is based on the epic novel Journey To The West. Part of this book followed Sun Wukong's (also known as The Monkey King) quest to become immortal as he learned Taoism and honed his supernatural skills.

From the two gameplay tailers shown so far, Wukong will see players step into the shoes of the titular Monkey King and use his magical abilities to sneak past or fight a range of fantastical foes - including a lightning-breathing dragon.

From shapeshifting into different creatures, using spells, and altering the size of his magical staff in combat, there's more than enough unique gameplay elements here to put a refreshing spin on the traditional Souls-like formula.

Wukong is likewise an incredibly good-looking game. Using Unreal Engine 5 to bring its fantastical setting to vibrant life, players will at least have something gorgeous to look at while being beaten by the same boss for the twentieth time.
