10 Upcoming 'Souls Like' Games To Play After Dark Souls 3
2. Nioh
Team Ninja, who are behind the long-running and infamously challenging Ninja Gaiden games, would probably take exception to their games being described as 'Souls-likes' when they date back much further than Miyazaki's baby.
But in terms of challenge and gameplay, there are plenty of similarities between the two series, and the upcoming PS4 exclusive, Nioh, looks to bring that gruelling Gaiden formula slashing into the current generation.
Combat is brutal and heavily focused around timing and dodging, though a little more glitzy and spectacular than Souls. In the recently-released playable demo, you can dash, do high jumps and savage finishing moves as the game's hero, William (aka Ninja Geralt). Flashy though it looks, it's still deep and satisfyingly difficult, as you need to monitor your stamina and enemy attack patterns to avoid being swiftly cut down.
Doesn't sound like Dark Souls yet? How about the death system, whereby your gained XP stays on your corpse and you need to run back and fetch it without dying or you'll lose it forever, or summoning other players, or the shortcuts, or-- you get the idea. It's a Souls-like alright, one of the most promising ones yet, in fact.
