10 Upcoming Video Games To Look Out For In May 2017
7. The Surge
What is it: The Surge is a futuristic, sci-fi action RPG, aimed towards a hardcore difficulty scale. So, yeah, it's a Souls "clone"- but a sci-fi one sounds too irresistible to ignore.
Employees of futuristic megacorp CREO are outfitted with an exoskeleton that can lift heavy steel with ease and resist environmental hazards - but when the exoskeleton-clad employees begin to go insane and the machines begin to turn hostile, things become bleak quickly. Players fill the role of new employee Warren, as he delves through the wreckage to find answers and find a way out alive.
Notable stand-outs from the typical Souls formula include a limb targeting system, which allows players to focus on unarmored limbs for quick kills, or batter down armor to loot it for scrap. Other variations include enhanced mobility options, like jumping in combat. A rocking electro soundtrack gets points as well.
German game developers Deck13 aren't walking into The Surge with a great track record; their last RPG hack and slash, Lords of the Fallen, was a derivative, lackluster wannabe. The Surge is thus tasked with proving that they can make the landing stick this time, silencing any doubters in the process.
When's it coming out: The Surge releases 16 May for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
