9. Murdered: Soul Suspect
Platform: PS3, 360, PC Here is something you rarely see: a fresh, new AAA franchise releasing on previous-generation hardware. One of the most intriguing-looking titles to release on ANY platform in 2014, Murdered: Soul Suspect looks to have all you could want out of a game like this: a unique concept, gorgeous graphics, a sense of mystery, and an engrossing story. The buzz around the game at E3 2013 was extremely positive, albeit completely overshadowed by the now infamous Sony/Microsoft drama that transpired at that memorable convention. As the title implies, you play as a character who is murdered at the beginning of the game. However, it turns out your character's soul isn't quite ready to rest yet, and it also happens to be that you were police detective in the living world, driving you on a quest for answers as to what happened. The game has you playing as a ghost, trying to piece together the mystery behind your death while also running into a whole new slew of problems in the form of dark creatures from the spirit world. Gameplay videos indicate that the game will mix traditional action gameplay with the investigation sensibilities of a point & click adventure game, something that L.A. Noire did a few years back with varying success. Murdered: Soul Suspect's moody tone and dark thematic material that straddle the lines between reality and the unknown make the game stand out among the crowd. If Airtight Games can deliver a game that delivers on the potential shown here, Murdered: Soul Suspect could end up being one of the stand out titles of 2014.
