6. Samba De Amigo's Maracas

As rhythm titles became increasingly popular, it seemed every musical instrument inspired a gaming counterpart. However, no one was expecting any studio to greenlight a game that required maraca-shaped controllers.

And yet, that's exactly what Samba de Amigo did. In this Dreamcast title, you play as a sombrero-sporting monkey called Amigo. Throughout each song, you must position your percussion instruments to match the notes on-screen.

Despite the simple premise, the maracas were astoundingly complex, requiring magnetic sensors and ultrasonic transmitters to triangulate the player's position. (The fact this was achieved with 90s technology is mind-boggling.)

Now, because the Wii had motion controls, you'd assume Samba would work perfectly on it. Since the port for this Nintendo system came out nine years after the original, you'd think it would be smoother than ever.

Ironically, the Wii version is regarded as the worst port of Samba, even though it feels like the console was tailor-made for it! That should give you an idea how the original controls were lightyears ahead of their time..

Even though Sonic Team's head designer, Shun Nakamura, thinks Samba de Amigo's mechanics would operate perfectly on the Switch, there have been no official reports when the series could return.
