10 Video Game Betas That Put You Off Full Games
7. Anthem
Bioware remains a shadow of its former self and it's their latest title that's mostly to blame. Anthem stands as perhaps the biggest failure of the entire eighth console generation and much of it came down to how the game didn't make much of an impression at all.
Right from the get-go, Anthem's development was fraught with difficulty and no clear direction. Despite Bioware's A-team leading the project, they still spent years trying to pin down what they wanted the game to be. The struggles with the Frostbite Engine didn't help either, as EA mandated the technology be used in all their mainline franchises.
When the game's demo arrived in early 2019, it spoke volumes of just how muddled and unfocused the game was. Anthem quickly devolved into a bland and tedious grind for many players with its shallow story and mission design. The reward for putting up with all this was nowhere near worth the effort as Anthem's loot system was heavily criticised for its lack of depth.
Many of these same issues would carry into the final game and over a year after its release, Bioware is desperately trying to salvage the game and upgrade it. With new consoles looming, the fate of both Anthem and its developer remain uncertain.
