10 Video Game Boss Fights That Broke The Rules

8. Any Boss - Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Sadly not all rule-breaking boss fights are actually for the better, as anyone who has ever played the great Deus Ex: Human Revolution can surely testify.

Upon launch, countless players complained about the game's four boss fights, which with their mandatory combat effectively punished players who had focused on creating a stealth build character.

And so, many had to either try and cheese their way through the fight or actually put the game down entirely, because while the fights weren't mechanically complex in the slightest, they contradicted the previously established rule that stealth is always an option.

It was later revealed that these boss battles were outsourced to another developer due to time constraints, and it really shows.

The complaints were pervasive enough that Eidos eventually revamped the fights for the Director's Cut re-release, allowing players to defeat the bosses through stealth and hacking.

As much as creative rule-breaking can result in a boss fight quite unlike anything else, developers who contradict their own internal gameplay logic also risk alienating players en masse.
