Stealth games normally drop the ball when it comes to the last boss. Gone is everything the player has learned up until this point, and now everything is all about that climactic set pieces that the developers can hang their hat on before the game cuts to black and the credits roll. Well, not when it comes to Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

Blacklist is a black sheep of the series though. Micheal Ironside was gone in favour of a younger lead, Eric Johnson and there were was more mission than ever set in the day. Then again, we didn’t know how good we had it.

It's in this final entry where Blacklist has one of its shining moments. Gone are those trademark night-vision goggles and well, gone is just about everything else. Sam Fisher is at the end of his wits hunting down Majid Sadiq in the snow with only his knight and the shadows as his ally. And that is it, the player will have to stick to the shadows and use stealth to their advantage. Because if they rush Sadiq he’ll put them down like a dog and paint the snow red with Sam’s blood.

This is boss design at its simplest, but also somehow ends up being so damn clever.
