10 Video Game Characters Fans OBSESSED Over (Commenter's Edition)
6. GLaDOS - Portal
The teleporting mechanics of Portal are so flawless and addictive, Valve's puzzle shooter would've been a hit, even if it had no narrative. However, the central antagonist, GLaDOS, turned an already astounding title into one of the funniest games ever.
Because of her monotonous intonation pattern, it would've been so easy for GLaDOS to come across as a boring automaton. Thanks to Ellen MacLain's subtle inflections and the tight script, all of GLaDOS' utterances are comedy gold.
Being your mortal enemy, you should despise this AI unit (especially after she said you have a dumb voice.) But no matter how many times she tries to kill you, you can't help being won over by GLaDOS' hysterical putdowns.
Despite being killed in the game's climax, GLaDOS was too popular to die, which is why she came back for the sequel. Even though her resurrection could've come across as pure fan-service, gamers didn't care, since they were so happy to see this maniacal operation unit return.
Because Portal 2 delves into her backstory, this could've robbed GLaDOS of her mystique, potentially ruining the character. Instead, learning about how she came to be helped humanise her and make GLaDOS a surprisingly sympathetic character (and not just because she was turned into a potato).
Also, how can you not fall in love with GLaDOS after hearing her song in Portal 2's credits?
