10 Video Game Characters Who Became Villains By Accident
6. Detlaff - The Witcher 3
Detlaff Van Der Eretein is the primary antagonist of the Witcher 3’s Blood and Wine DLC.
He is a higher vampire who, despite being named the dreaded Beast of Beauclair, is actually a rather sympathetic character who didn’t mean to commit all the murders that Geralt chases him for.
While Detlaff is certainly responsible for killing the four knights in the beginning of the DLC, you learn that he hasn’t done it for malicious intent. His true goal was to save his kidnapped love, Syanna, by taking out the targets pointed out by her mysterious captor.
The incidental nature of his villainous acts becomes even more apparent when it turns out Syanna staged her own kidnapping to manipulate Detlaff into enacting her revenge on the knights responsible for her exile from Toussaint.
Of course, after Detlaff learns the truth, he decides to terrorize the city of Beauclair to force Syanna into confronting him, but this still doesn’t change the fact that the only reason the vampire became the Beast of Beauclair in the first place was because he thought he was saving his beloved.
