10 Video Game Characters You Didn't Take Seriously (Until They Killed You)

5. Redrum (Xenogears)

In the late '90s, Square released a couple of PlayStation RPGs with big hair, big robots, and big blasphemous themes in abundance. One of those earned an ardent following, resulting in a slew of mediocre side games, a wonderfully atrocious movie, and a flashy 2020 remake set in a corridor.

The other is Xenogears, an oft-forgotten classic released just a year after Final Fantasy VII. Though the game has a cult following, there's been nowhere near the same fervour for an unnecessary remake over the past two decades.

That could be because it entirely falls off a cliff in disc 2 as obvious budget constraints literally force the story to be recounted from a rocking chair. It might be that it never got further than Japan and North America. For the purposes of this piece, it's because of Redrum, an inexplicably devilish boss about a third of the way through that made many players throw their PlayStation pads down in disgust.

The game's hero, Fei, encounters this clawed menace in the Kislev Sewers, during an escape from the slammer following a wrongful murder arrest. Coming after two goliath bosses taking place in the game's eponymous 'gears' - souped-up giant mechas - it's fair to assume Redrum, fought on foot, will be relatively trouble free.

Nope: not only does he have more HP than both those massive robots combined, but he can easily wipe the party in one hit if it's not sufficiently levelled. The clue's in his name, folks!

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
