10 Video Game Characters You Didn't Take Seriously (Until They Killed You)

4. Zote (Hollow Knight)

Throughout Hallownest, you'll frequently stumble upon the hapless, quixotic 'hero' Zote the Mighty, invariably in a bind from his latest misguided tilt at a webbed windmill. Though he'd perish otherwise, Zote, deluded by his hubris, does not appreciate the assists, and declares The Knight his rival.

Save him from certain death, and Zote will even turn up as the last 'boss' in the Colosseum's Trial of the Warrior. As you might expect, he's no match for Hollow Knight's hero, literally stumbling through the fight without posing any threat whatsoever.

Zote's true strength isn't through the tangible, but in what people perceive. Because he believes words have power, he named his nail 'Life Ender'. In reality, it's made out of shellwood, and utterly useless. Those who don't know that fear it.

Bretta, Zote's own Dulcinea del Toboso, buys into his cult, worshipping him as the greatest hero who ever lived. The Colosseum may have proved that bunkum in reality, but enter her dreams and you'll come face to face with her idealised fantasy of Hollow Knight's own Don Quixote. Not only can his nail now land a scratch on The Knight, but it can bloody well kill him - and quickly. In fact, Zote - or Grey Prince Zote, to give him his full dream title - is one of the hardest bosses in an already very hard game.

Benjamin was born in 1987, and is still not dead. He variously enjoys classical music, old-school adventure games (they're not dead), and walks on the beach (albeit short - asthma, you know). He's currently trying to compile a comprehensive history of video game music, yet denies accusations that he purposefully targets niche audiences. He's often wrong about these things.
