10 Video Game Clichés Everyone Is Sick Of
1. The Economy Is Broken (And You Broke It)
This one is a cliche and it still happens in video games all the time but it’s not entirely the developers fault here, it’s your fault. I’m looking at you money hoarders. Now I’m the first to admit I hate using items and spending money in video games.
It took me a while to get into The Witcher 3’s potion system because I didn’t realise I can just rest and get my potions back which is the game basically begging you to engage with its consumables.
Whether you’re playing The Witcher, Elder Scrolls, Dragon Age, or GTA, chances are good you’ll end up with more money than you know what to do with and the entire existence of it becomes meaningless. The problem here is that money is still almost always the reward for anything you do in game so if you don’t care about the reward it can somewhat impact your feeling of satisfaction on completing quests.
This thing you’ve chased all game you now have in surplus, and there’s no gear you can’t afford; no NPC you can’t pay off. It can feel a bit narratively strange, especially if you’re supposed to be an underdog and you’re walking around with the common folk knowing you’re really Richie Rich.
It’s hard to imagine how video game economies could fix this, especially since your mileage will vary based on how much of a hoarder you are but it’s definitely something we keep seeing in video games.
