9. Eli Vance - Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Half-Life 2: Episode Two concludes with Alyx and Gordon preparing to visit the Aperture Science research vessel known as the Borealis, and as compelling a cliffhanger as that would've been in of itself, Valve decided to dish up one final jolting surprise for fans.

In the game's closing moments, the hangar is discovered by two Advisors, one of which quickly grabs Alyx's father Eli and impales him through the back of the head in front of her very eyes. Alyx is scarcely saved from the same fate by Dog, and the episode ends with Alyx cradling her father's corpse. Bummer.

Though the player being unable to do anything to help Eli is bad enough, it's even worse when you consider that this game was released over 12 years ago, and Valve still hasn't gotten around to giving fans any sort of narrative follow-up whatsoever. That's what truly makes the player feel powerless.
