10 Video Game Developer Roles You Didn't Know Exist

1. Ideas Guy

Okay, so this is definitely cheating, because this is actually one that absolutely does not exist, yet time and time again, we see people trying to be the "visionary auteur" member of the team that has a ton of input for every mechanic or feature, yet implements none of them.

That's not to say that you can't have a specialism and also have a ton of great ideas. In game development, creativity is a whopping great warhammer in the battle against your players' boredom orcs. But without means or method for implementation, ideas may as well just live in your wee visionary noggin forever.

What's normally advised for people that insist they want to make "Ideas Guy" into a real job is to learn the tools required for game design and prototyping - the former teaches you restraint and the ability to break down your ideas into tangible systems, whilst the latter allows you to test those ideas out functionally.

And if you don't have the patience for that... maybe just try arguing about the legitimacy of your unproven, unsubstantiated ideas on Twitter with strangers?

Hey, it's worked for my career so far.
