10 Video Game Endings That Left You Totally Speechless
2. Booker DeWitt Is Comstock - BioShock Infinite
When BioShock Infinite first emerged as a playable game, you couldn't go anywhere without somebody mentioning the downright insane nature of its ending. "You have to play BioShock," they all said. "And the ending... it's something else entirely."
What at first sounded like hyperbole soon revealed itself to be anything but, as the game's dense and complex finale caused feverish gamers to drop their controllers, mouths aghast, as they tried to comprehend what, exactly, had just happened.
In a nutshell, BioShock Infinite poises you as one Booker DeWitt, a Pinkerton Agent tasked with rescuing a young girl named Elizabeth from the clutches of an evil ruler, one Zachary Hale Comstock. At the end of the game, though, it's revealed that you - Booker DeWitt - are actually Comstock, albeit in an alternative universe, had he made different choices.
Not just that, however: it turns out that Elizabeth, positioned as a semi-love interest of sorts, is actually Booker's daughter, Anna, which only adds another layer of "What the hell?" to the already crazy proceedings. The game ends with Elizabeth drowning Booker in order to change the future and prevent him from ever becoming the evil Comstock.
It was totally bonkers and endlessly brilliant in equal measure; no wonder everybody wanted to talk about it (after they'd got over the initial shock of it all, of course).
