10 Video Game Endings That Left You Totally Speechless

7. Do You Feel Like A Hero Yet? - Spec Ops: The Line

Spec Ops: The Line is probably the least notable game to feature on this list; for the most part, it's a straight-forward shooter, albeit with great atmosphere and detail. But the real power inherent to this title comes from its totally insane ending - one that forces you to look back across every inch of your progress and question the moral quandaries involved.

The game, set in Dubai, has you playing as a soldier as you go about doing the same sort of things that most first-person shooter titles ask you to do: you know, blowing stuff up and killing people and putting civilians in danger. The usual. But Spec Ops: The Line is cleverer than that, because it puts you in moral situations and doesn't tell you what to do. It's up to you, the player, to decide how to handle it - but you must suffer the consequences.

Then there's the ending (of which there are four), all of which - in their breadth and scope - provide one of the most shocking endings to have ever graced the medium of video games. It turns out that the protagonist of the game, Walker, has been suffering from a series of delusions in order to rationalise his questionable actions and cement himself as a hero.

The point of this ending, of course, is as an exploration of the horrors of war - on those who fight for good, and those who fight for "evil." Who's right and who's wrong? Spec Ops: The Line dared to ask these questions in its ending, which ensured that - despite the game's flaws - the finale would stick with you. Even now, it's entirely impossible to shake.
