10 Video Game Endings That Left You Totally Speechless
6. What Have I Done? - Shadow Of The Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus, perhaps one of the greatest video games ever made and the definitive argument for video games as "art," tells a seemingly simple story: as hero Wander, your mission is to kill the giant Colossi who roam the world - huge, ancient and seemingly evil beings - in order to bring your girlfriend, Mono, back from the dead.
The length of the game consists of Wander and his horse, Agro, tracking down each Colossi until they're all vanquished. At first, this task is fun and you relish the chance to murder these horrifying beasts. But after a while, you're unable to escape the feeling that something is wrong; maybe these beasts aren't so bad after all? And then it happens...
The ending of Shadow of the Colossus literally throws everything you've done for the entire length of the game right back at you, as it's revealed that Wander has been a mere pawn all this time - for his selfish actions (that is, murdering the Colossi for his own purposes) the hero of the game is punished; he's sucked into a vortex and is transformed into a baby.
At this point, Mono awakens.. and doesn't recognise him. It's a horribly bleak and sombre ending - one that begs the player to ask "What have I done?" as your perception of Wander changes dramatically. Could it be, after all, that he was really the villain the whole time?
