5. The Death Of Eli Vance - Half-Life 2: Episode Two

It's been seven long years since Half-Life 2: Episode Two left gamers staring at their screens in outright horror. The pain still lingers on.

After escaping from the clutches of City 17, silent hero Gordon Freeman finds himself holed up at a secret base with his partner, Alyx Vance, her father, Eli, and an assortment of other colourful personalities, as a special rocket is launched into the air and a dangerous, world-ending portal is closed. Phew. But then it happens...

As Gordon and Alyx prepare themselves for another mission, the base is attacked by an alien being known as an Advisor, who - in a completely unexpected twist - violently kills Eli Vance before their eyes. Before Gordon and Alyx can themselves be killed, they're rescued by Alyx's pet robot, D0g. Episode Two literally ends as Alyx sobs over Eli's lifeless body.

And that's the last thing to have ever happened in the Half-Life saga. Seven years later, and enraged fans are still waiting for the next installment. Regardless of the wait, though, what an ending, huh? The death of a major character, and... fade to black. That's how you build expectations, Valve.
