10 Video Game Endings That Shocked The World
1. Nier: Automata - Ending E: The [E]nd Of Yorha
Every ending in this game can be perceived as shocking; from death by mackerel to uncovering various dark truths. Ending E can only be obtained after reaching endings C and D in prior playthroughs, meaning the player has viewed all the tragic outcomes which befall 2B, 9S, A2, and the entirety of Yorha.
This knowledge gives further weight to whichever decisions the player will make during Ending E. After witnessing but being unable to prevent various horrors in the previous routes, the pods directly ask the player questions about fate and futility.
If the player answers ‘yes’, the credits will role and a mini-game will begin, an incredibly difficult bullet-hell mini-game determined to strike down the player despite their best efforts. If the player dies, help is offered from another player who has already succeeded. This co-operation is invaluable for making this challenge less gruelling.
After succeeding and being shown that this was all to create hope for a different and better future, the player is given a choice. They can save their data and carry on as normal or sacrifice their save file to assist other players in the final battle. The latter decision is both irreversible and permanent.
