The Golden Sun RPG franchise just hasn’t been given a fair shake. The games aren’t up there with the Final Fantasy series in terms of popularity, but they’ve spawned a dedicated following.

The original launched on the Game Boy Advance in 2001, receiving critical acclaim for its innovative Djinn system (in which collectable creatures of different elements were ‘equipped’ to party members, with different combinations resulting in different job classes for each character). It became a cult favorite and was followed by Golden Sun: The Lost Age the previous year.

After this, there was an eight year wait for the third game, Nintendo DS’s Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. This game picked up the action three decades later (which, coincidentally, is exactly how long players felt like they’d waited for this follow up), starring the children of the original heroes as they faced another crisis.

While this magic-wielding, blade-swinging RPG was also well received, and its transition into 3D visuals pulled off well, its plot just didn’t tie everything together. With the crisis averted, the group find that a whole new threat seems to be shaping up.

With the mysteriously absent Garret and Isaac and the super cheesy ‘The End?’ message, fans were left frustrated and wondering if the franchise will ever make a return.

Not that Golden Sun fans aren’t used to that feeling.
