what they’re signing up for here: the nefarious Bowser has kidnapped Princess
Peach (again), Mario sets off in pursuit (again).
The series has taken elaborate strides into space and so on, but that core formula remains unchanged. Still, this is really all players need to drive the platforming action, which means it’s a-okay by fans.
Interestingly, though, the Super Mario series is responsible for one of the biggest troll endings gaming. Not just once, either, but several times over.
The infamous “thank you Mario! But our princess is in another castle!” lines originate from Super Mario Bros., in which the final boss of each world proves to be… well, not Princess Peach. This trollish ‘ending’ repeats in each world until Bowser is finally repeated and Mario does find the Princess. When he does, the pay-off is so darn brief that he may as well not have bothered in the first place. Imagine fighting your way through the devious Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels for that!
