10 Video Game Endings Worse Than A Game Over
9. The Mask Lives On - Splatterhouse
In true gory Splatterhouse tradition, the first game of the franchise ends with you having to kill the very woman you put the mask on to save in the first place. Sure, you had to because your girlfriend had been possessed by a nightmarish demon, but it's still not exactly a great time.
Just to emphasise that this ending sucks, the mask you make a pact with at the start of the game (that is stuck to your face) betrays you in order to summon the final boss. While you might hope that the game ends with you freeing yourself from the Mask of Terror once more, you actually can't. You were bound to it until you saved your girlfriend, and as she is currently a bit dead - since you killed her and all - you're stuck with your new pal.
And so you're left standing just beyond the burning wreckage of the house this all went down in, silently wondering how daily life is going to go while you look like Jason Voorhes' ripped older brother.
Splatterhouse 2 and 3 both have lighter endings, but since the franchise ended on a remake with a less cheery close, it seems like this is one franchise fated to have miserable conclusions.
