10 Video Game Enemy Designs You Can’t Unsee

1. Vortex Queen - Ecco The Dolphin

The most messed up thing about Ecco the Dolphin is that, for reasons unknown, most games that include the happy little dolphin also have one moment of unimaginable horror gently tucked away inside them, just waiting to disturb a kid so bad they can't even look at the ocean for the rest of their lives.

The most horrifying, though, is still easily in the first game for the Sega Genesis. For the most part, it's a light-hearted romp through the ocean, where you mostly fight weird-looking jellyfish.

For the vast majority of the game, the worst thing you face is a spider crab - and while these are pretty wild looking, they are real creatures that we know exist, and thus make sense to see in the depths of the ocean.

Only, within almost a blink of an eye, we're suddenly fighting aliens to save the world. This manifests in the uniquely traumatic boss fight against the Vortex Queen, who is lifted seemingly whole out of the Alien franchise, but is somehow more disturbing because it now exists in a game that was, until this point, for kids.
