10 Video Game Facts That Aren’t True
5. Herobrine
From one unfound creature stalking the foothills to another.
Whilst generally a chilled experience, Minecraft’s community showed the game had potential for a dark side in August 2010 when the legend of Herobrine began.
A member of 4chan’s paranormal board posted a mysterious blurry image of another player character standing in the fog with chilling white eyes. They gave the strange appearance a name and said that their world had been littered with random, unexplained blocks and formations.
Herobrine’s next appearance was in a livestream by Twitch user Copeland who encountered the figure about twenty minutes into a stream and promptly ended the show, terrified. Soon, other content creators were experiencing similar occurrences. There was a lot of debate to be had amongst the Minecraft community but most people knew the score.
Minecraft was always a very easily moddable game, and that was one thing that has engaged its community for so long. It was easy for players to grow and spread the urban myth of Herobrine by creating their own contributions to it.
The reality is: he never existed and Mojang have gone on record as saying that he never will.
Still, that hasn’t stopped them from fanning the flames by including the name in loading screen text or update logs.
