The Assassin's Creed series revolves around the continued struggle between the Assassins and their ideological enemies the Templars, known as Abstergo in today's world. It's a war that has existed for thousands of years on every single continent and has led to countless atrocities on both sides over the course of the series. However, it's also a conflict born out of more similarities than differences.

Both factions believe in freedom and liberty, the key distinction between them being the fact that the Templars believe in freedom through control of the people, which has led to a few sinister individuals in need of a good assassination rising up through the years.

However, it doesn't seem to matter how many crazed Templars come and go, they always come back on top and even stronger than before. In the words of Haytham Kenway from Assassin's Creed III:

"The people never have the power, only the illusion of it. And here is the real secret: they don't want it. The responsibility is too great to bear. It's why they are so quick to fall in line as soon as someone else takes charge."

If this theory is to be believed, then it really changes how players see both factions in each one of the games, and how hapless the Assassins' struggle really is in reality.
