The Super Mario universe kicked off with 1981's arcade classic Donkey Kong. The game revolves around Jumpman, a New York city native who climbs up ladders and jumps over barrels on his way to saving his love interest, Pauline. However, despite what most people might assume, Jumpman isn't Super Mario.

The truth behind the Mario Bros.' origins has always been a mystery, but this particular theory explains that Jumpman is in fact their true father. The moustache, outfit, damsel in distress love interest and obsession for jumping aside, the two men also share a pretty hefty feud with the Donkey Kong family.

This particular theory also has a slightly sinister twist to it. At the end of Donkey Kong Junior, Jumpman, who is actually the evil antagonist during the game, is killed by the baby Kong in the family.

Thanks to this one fan theory, a whole load of shade is suddenly cast over the relationship between Super Mario and Donkey Kong going forward. On top of the sudden blood feuding between families now plaguing the Mushroom Kingdom, there's also the added strangeness of seeing these enemies putting their differences aside for the odd round of golf or kart racing.
