10 Video Game Features Devs Deleted Because Of YOU
3. Loot Crates (Star Wars Battlefront II)
Microtransactions, loot boxes, pay-to-win boosters, and all creatively bankrupt monetization efforts could take up their own entry on this list. Plenty of games, such as Diablo III, Payday 2, or Middle-Earth: Shadow of War, have found themselves deleting such features due to fan backlash. However, when picking one to discuss, it has to be Star Wars Battlefront II.
This infamous EA title pushed the concept of pay-to-win progression to the max, with its early use of Loot Crates creating a hellscape of in-game purchases and gamer outrage. Players were all but forced to choose between grinding for unreasonable hours or forking out cash to gamble at the chance of instant progression.
Naturally, this didn't go down well.
The backlash to this monetized system was so intense it caused a fan boycott and even created Reddit's most downvoted comment after an EA spokesperson tried to quell the problem with corporate speak. It became clear that DICE, the devs, couldn't fix the issue through words, so they opted for actions instead and gutted the whole thing. The Loot Crates were deleted, and it was all thanks to the fans.
