10 Video Game Glitches That Turned Into Features
3. Rocket Jumping - Quake
The original Quake game was one of the earliest titles to build a community of speedrunners around itself. One huge reason for this was one of the game's famous glitches, which allowed the players to beat the game fast and in style.
Rocket jumping is a technique which, as the name implies, allows the player to leap through great chunks of the map by using the explosions caused by their gun.
In the original Quake, the technique was an exploit of a glitch that the developers didn't account for. However, once it was discovered, and players seemed to have a lot of fun with it, the game's production team started including rocket jumping as a feature in all the following sequels.
Nowadays, rocket jumping is pretty much synonymous with the franchise. You can't imagine a Quake game without the ability to soar into the air with an explosive blast from your weapon.
The feature is what makes the games recognizable, and why some of their longtime fans are still motivated to beat them as fast as they can.
