10 Video Game Hallucinations That Melted Your Mind
6. The Sanity Effects - Eternal Darkness
Eternal Darkness is one of the most creative video games of all time, and one that depressingly remains stranded on the Nintendo GameCube.
The psychological horror game's ingenious gimmick was its groundbreaking inclusion of a "Sanity Meter," which would degrade whenever the player was spotted by an enemy.
When the bar runs low, the player begins to experience a number of reality-altering events, ranging from the subtle to the outrageous.
Some of the better hallucinatory tricks include the game's volume turning itself down, the screen supposedly switching to another TV input, the GameCube intro screen flashing up, your save game apparently being deleted, the camera angle shifting out of nowhere, and stationary in-game elements coming to life.
It was brilliantly executed throughout, ensuring that players weren't ever quite sure what unpredictable rug-pull might be throw at them next, while forcing them to question what truly was "real" within the game itself.
