In what is actually the second of the series, Red Dead Redemption focuses on John's forced enlistment by the law to track down his old gang. Bureau agents have taken John's wife and son captive, forcing John to cooperate and do the dirty work.

When he first confronts his former comrade Bill Williamson, he attempts to reason with him initially, but John is shot and left for dead, showing that his old gang isn't about to go quietly.

John tracks Williamson to Mexico, where he has linked up with another of their old posse, Javier Escuella. It is here that Williamson, and possibly Javier depending on your actions, are killed. Thus, that leaves just one final member: his old leader, Dutch van der Linde.

Backed into a corner, Dutch opts to leap to his death rather than face capture, but not before warning John that the Bureau will never let him live in peace. John is allowed to reunite with his family, but true to Dutch's suggestion, he is double-crossed by the Bureau.

John confronts the Bureau men, allowing his family time to escape. Although taking a valiant last stand, John is promptly gunned down.

John took many hardened thieves and murderers with him and sacrificed himself so his family may live. It doesn't get much nobler than that.
