10 Video Game Heroes Way Worse Than The Villain

9. The Last Of Us – Joel

Shadow Of The Colossus
Sony

Joel and Ellie’s journey through the infected wasteland of America is clearly no means of spreading evil. They’re there to survive, endure and survive, if you will. There are scavengers and cannibals along the way and of course, these types of people need to be dispatched, in self-defence specifically. You can even use David as a cannibalistic example of this. As in, Ellie is a docile little kitten until provoked. Well, if kittens could hold knives.

Joel on the other hand is far less redeemable. He wanted nothing to do with Ellie, even going so far as to baby her, not trusting his younger partner with the means of survival. Reluctance doesn't make you worse than a cannibal, but if you compare Joel to Marlene, the leader of the Fireflies who wanted to use Ellie to find a cure, the comparison becomes plausible.

Joel's past with his daughter and untrusting nature turns him from stubborn grump to full-on dad mode as soon as he finds out Marlene's plan. He goes so far into his "protective" side, in fact, that he outright lies to Ellie about everything. His partner and near-daughter he's spent almost a year with, through thick and thin. Instead of telling her the truth of the situation, he cowers behind a lie to keep Ellie from ever touching the subject.

A liar, just like Marlene and David.
